Досі памятаю аромат свіжих троянд на весіллі. Білосніжні скатертини, дзенькіт кришталевих келихів, гул сміху ніщо не змогло заглушити відчуття власної нікчемності.
Мене звуть Соломія Іващенко. Я не виросла в достатку. Заради оренди мешкала під час навчання в університеті з двох робіт, іноді пропускаючи їжу. Мати працювала прибиральницею, батько столяром. Нам вистачало любові, але бракувало іншого стабільності.
Потім я зустріла Олександра Козака.

Коли він зробив пропозицію, його батьки були ввічливими, але по їхніх очах було видно: я не та, кого вони бачили поруч із сином. Для них я була жебрачкою, що зуміла «причарувати» його. Його мати, Лілія, посміхалась під час сніданків, але потім радила мені одягатись «скромніше» на родинні події, наче мені було щось доводити. Його сестра, Тетяна, поводилась гірше. Вона майже не помічала мене.
Та я вірила: вони звикнуть. Що любов зможе подолати прірву.
Але от прийшла черга весілля Тетяни.
Вона виходила за інвестиційного банкіра людину, що відпочивала на Мальдівах і мала яхту «Зорепад». Серед гостей був усій світ західноукраїнської еліти. Ми з Олександром щойно повернулися з волонтерської поїздки до Африки і прилетіли прямо до маєтку під Рівним, де відбувалось весілля.
Проблеми почалися майже миттєво.

Та «хвилина» перетворилась на години.
Я складала серветки, переносила коробки, навіть розставляла гостей за столиками, бо Тетяна стверджувала, що я «вмію бути нейтральною». Інші подружки нареченої дивилися на мене, як на обслугу. Ніхто жодного разу не поцікавився, чи не потрібна мені вода, їжа чи відпочинок.
Під час репетиції вечері мати Тетяни посадила мене за стіл за три від Олександра поруч із командою паркувальників.
Я намагалась сміятись з цього. Не хотілося влаштовувати сцену.
Наступного ранку, вдягаючи ніжно-рожеву сукню скромну, звісно я казала собі: «Це лише один день. Поступайся. Ти виходиш за кохання свого життя, і це головне».
Але потім сталося те, що стало краплею.
На весільному банкеті я йшла до головного столу, щоб сісти поруч із Олександром, коли мене зупинила Тетяна.
«Ой, рибко,» сказала вона, кладучи свою манікюрену руку на мою, «фотографам потрібна симетрія. Стіл уже заповнено. Ти ж не протиш допомогти офіціантам донести десерти?»
Я втупилася в неї. «Що, ти хочеш, аби я подавала торт?»
Вона сяяла. «Лише для кількох знімків. Потім зможеш сісти, чесне слово.»
Саме тоді я побачила Олександра в кінці зали. Його відволік якийсь родич. Він нічого не чув. Не бачив.
Та я не могла рушити. Відчула жар у грудях, сором, що накрив мене мов холодний квас. На мить я була готова погодитись. Старі звички помирають важко
